Prayer Flag Weekend

  • Juicy Creatives Studio Lake Worth, FL 33461 U.S.A. (map)

Sorry ~ this workshop is full ☮️.

Join us for 3 days of hope for the world! Create your own sets of cloth prayer/peace/spirit flags, for yourself or as a soulful gift. You can join for all three days at a special rate or pick and choose.

Day One ~ Hand dying fabrics:

Friday Dec. 1st ~ Morning & Afternoon sessions with different techniques in each session:

You may not know this but in my very distant past (late 1980’s/early 1990’s) I was a hippy-shop proprietor, dead-head and a tie-dye master making modern super-bright fadeless tie-dyes which I sold to hundreds of small shops and some big shops too such as Dillard’s and JCPenny.

In this workshop I’ll teach you all my tips and tricks and will have over 20 colors of dye mixed up and ready for you to use:

Morning Session Tie-Dye Fabrics + Ice Dying! 10am -12:00pm

  • Create your own tie-dye & solid colored prayer flag backgrounds, I’ll have lots of white cotton muslin fabric sheeting & thick cotton drop cloth fabric to form the base of your prayer flags (p.s. if you’re a sewer or a crafter this fabric, once dyed by your own hands, can be used in myriads of projects from jewelry to spirit dolls to quilts).

  • Learn modern tie-dye patterns and how to fold them + experiment with the latest craze: “ice-dying” and “low-immersion” dying to create watercolor/crinkle effects.

  • Bring up to 6 other garments/tapestries/cloth of your own 100% cotton material to tie-dye. That white shirt with an unfortunate stain can often be tie-dyed for a new lease on life! Or go out & thrift or buy new t-shirts, leggings, underwear, tuxedo shirt (your imagination is the only limit!) to transform with tie-dye (just make sure the fabric is 100% cotton).

Friday December 1st ~
Afternoon Session Indigo Dying + tie-dye silks in the microwave! 1:00-3:00pm

  • Learn about the history of indigo dying + a new modern way to get that deep indigo blue color that is gentler to the environment.

  • Discover the instant results of indigo dying as you learn how to tie and bind different patterns to create prayer flag backgrounds + you have the opportunity to dye up to 6 garments you bring from home.

  • Learn how to tie-dye a silk scarf in the microwave with instant results - you can wear your scarf right out of the workshop (one silk scarf included in workshop price extras available for $10/each — these are silks that after being creatively dyed are sold for $30-$50each, & they make great handmade gifts!).

  • Lots of muslin sheeting and heavier cotton drop cloth material for your experimentation & prayer flag backgrounds, you may also bring up to 6 other garments/fabrics in silk or cotton to dye.

Day Two ~ Fast printmaking on fabric

Saturday Dec. 2nd ~ Gelliplate Printing on Fabric 12:00 - 5:30pm

We’ll start by revealing and sharing the dyed fabrics from the previous day, then we’ll engage inspirational journaling, gathering and intention setting for the prayer flags we’ll create.

Heading into the studio you will begin or expand a journey in easy & fast printmaking with the MAGICAL gelliplate - a rubbery, flexible printing plate. Discover the fun of rolling paint on the surface with a brayer, then press stencils, leaves, string and other texture into the paint allowing you to “pull prints” from the matrix you create.

Gelli-plate printed fabric with some of the juicy stencils at the studio.

In this 2nd day of the prayer flag workshop you will learn how to make prints on paper and fabric from the hundreds of stencils & natural objects at the studio:

  • You can choose a visual theme for your prayer flags & instantly gelli-print them onto fabric from the abundance of stencils in the studio with powerful themes such as:

    • Sacred geometry + chakras

    • Moon/stars + goddess magic

    • Ocean + mermaid

    • Peace + justice

    • abstract + geometric

    • gobs more!

  • You will experiment with the materials on paper first creating lots of collage fodder for art journals/soul-collage cards and other paper crafts, then when you get the hang of it switch to fabric pieces ~ print on your tie-dye fabric or white muslin and watch your prayer flags come to life!

Day 3 ~ Putting it all together

Sunday Dec. 3rd ~ Putting it all together, with a very special guest teacher, fabric artist Kianga Jinaki 12:00 - 5:30pm
Now we put our prayer flags together and learn different ways to embellish each panel.

The radiant Kianga and some of her creations!

  • Learn hand sewing and machine sewing techniques.

  • Discover the world of embroidery and slow-stitching.

  • Learn how to make chunky fabric beads to add to your prayer flags.

  • Discover threads, trims, sequins and tassels to bling your designs if you choose.

We’ll end the day with a special ceremony of blessing the prayer flags so they may do their best work in the world!

We hope you’ll join us all three days and save $63! However, you can pick and choose sessions based on your availability and interest — see all the details below:
